Frequently Asked Questions

Safety | Is it safe to use public computers?

The decision whether to use the APNK computers is with you.  Here is a list of what we do to ensure the People's Network, PCs and our users are protected.

  • Frozen - the APNK PCs are "frozen" that is, any changes made to the computers are wiped when the computer is restarted. This includes browsing history, temp files, cookies, anything saved to the hard drive of the computer, including My Documents.

TIP - always restart the public computer when you have finished using it - this means the next customer can't see what you have been working on.

  • Network security - the People's Network operates under a strict network policy to prevent unauthorized access
  • Anti-virus scanning - APNK internet is filtered to block viruses (and offensive content)
  • Anti-virus desktop protection - the APNK computers have up-to-date desktop anti-virus software installed
  • Approved programs only may run - it is not possible to install programs (software) on the public computers (to prevent malicious applications being used)
  • Windows Updates - Microsoft critical updates are run regularly on APNK computers and servers.
